2 released, 2 still in hospital following weekend crash

GREENFIELD — Of the four area teenagers hospitalized following a crash late Saturday on Leyden Road, two were treated and released and two remained in hospital Monday.

Ian Lemay, 18, of Harrison Ave. and Megan Wendoloski, 18, of Hatfield, were both treated and released from Baystate Franklin Medical Center, according to hospital spokeswoman Amy Swisher.

Austin Wheeler, 18, of Silver Street was listed in good condition at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Swisher said.

Taran Weeks, 19, of Adams Road, was initially taken to Baystate Medical Center then transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where a spokesman said he was in fair condition Monday.

Greenfield Police Sgt. David Rice said speed was definitely a factor in the accident, reported at 11:39 p.m Saturday on a bend in the road just north of Leyden Woods Lane.

Rice said the minivan went off the road and rolled onto its side before striking a tree on its roof with enough force to embed glass in the tree.

Rice said police arrived to find one passenger out of the vehicle, apparently ejected during the crash, and three still inside.

A police officer assisted one passenger from the vehicle, cutting himself in the process. Firefighters extricated Wheeler and Weeks, the driver, from the van, Rice said.

“This accident, while the injuries were serious, could have been a lot of worse,” Rice said. “The car had severe damage and we also believe none of them had seat belts on.”

Rice said an emergency room nurse happened to show up right after police arrived at the scene and was invaluable in managing the four patients.

Emergency medical technicians, paramedics and ambulance crews from Colrain, Shelburne Falls, Brattleboro, Vt., and Northampton and Baystate Health Ambulance assisted at the scene. Rice said it was his understanding the LifeFlight helicopter ambulance could not fly.

The accident remains under investigation.
