Letter: Keep the moratorium
Massachusetts has had a moratorium on new incinerators for 22 years. We know the health risks. So why does DEP want to terminate this restriction? Regardless of industry spin, burning trash is dirty. The science of incineration is well-researched and documented. It releases huge quantities of toxins into the air that include heavy metals, mercury, and dioxins. They are carcinogenic and contribute to global warming.
The people of Greenfield have been very clear that we don’t want the environmental destruction of a biomass plant. A waste-to-energy plant raises the same questions about compromising quality of life, creating pollution, and jeopardizing public health. I am always concerned about the lack of transparency with these projects that are in the corporate interest and not in that of the community. Plus, we need to be aware that Madera Energy still has its permit.
Everyone needs to be informed. Please come to the Hearing at the Department of Planning and Development, 114 Main St., Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m.
