Winterland shuts down

Declining business cited

GREENFIELD — Although many local businesses were closed for the holiday on New Year’s Eve, the Winterland nightclub’s windows have been darkened permanently.

The bar on the ground floor of the former F.W. Webb building on Hope Street closed for good this past weekend after six years in business.

Joseph A. “J.P.” Poirier Jr. opened Winterland Country Club in 2006 as an indoor virtual golf range with a seasonal alcohol license for the winter months.

Acquiring a year-round liquor license in 2007, the business evolved into a nightclub and bar with frequent live musical performances.

Poirier confirmed the establishment is no longer open but preferred not to comment further, saying the business just fizzled out and he has not been closely involved in running the establishment for a couple of years.

Co-owner John “Trip” O’Gorman could not be reached for comment.
