GREENFIELD — The Country Club of Greenfield has asked the town for a full liquor license and the Greenfield Town Council has agreed to ask the state for the special legislation the town needs to grant that request.

According to former Council President and club President Timothy Farrell, he believes the town will be about four over its quota for full liquor licenses to restaurants and clubs if legislators give the go-ahead and the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission does the same.

Farrell said the club currently has a seasonal license to serve alcohol from April 1 to Jan. 15 each year, but now that it will have a restaurant open to the public seven days a week, it would like a year-round license.

He said, based on his past experience on the Town Council, it could take up to three months for the club to receive the license, because if the request gets the special legislation and approval from the ABCC, it will then have to go before the town’s Board of License Commissioners for final approval.

The club on Country Club Road, which lost its century-old clubhouse to fire on Oct. 22, 2011, rebuilt this past year and recently opened its new $1.8 million facility.

Its large dining room seats 70, the private dining room seats 30 and the pavilion seats 165.

The new restaurant, which at this point has no name, is open only for lunch each day, but starting April 1 it will be open for dinner, as well.

That is when Abaz Cecunjanin, owner of Bella Notte Ristorante on Hucklehill Road in Bernardston, will take over, said Farrell.

Cecunjanin, who could not be reached by press time, will lease space from the club and his name will be on the liquor license. He currently leases the Bella Notte building from Sandri Companies Inc.

Lou Bresciano, owner of the Cookie Factory on Federal Street, has done food service for the club for the past 25 years, but decided to focus on his other business. The small restaurant he ran inside the club was open only to members.

Farrell said the new liquor license would not be able to be transferred to another location in town, so, for instance, it would never be able to be sold to a downtown restaurant.

The former councilor said he believes the town is currently allowed 18 full, year-round liquor licenses and it has 22. So, if the club is granted one, the town would be five over its limit.

“Many towns and cities go way above their limits,” said Farrell. “We do pretty well.”

Farrell said if granted, the license would not allow alcohol to be taken off club property.
