Former Greenfield woman on her way to next Olympics

GREENFIELD — It appears you can’t keep a good woman down — especially if it’s Greenfield’s own Olympian, Elena Pirozhkova.

The 25-year-old won the FILA Women’s World Championships in women’s freestyle wrestling in Canada on Sept. 29, a first step toward another Olympic bid in 2016.

Pirozhkova returned from London, England, in August after losing her first match, which dashed her hopes for an Olympic medal this time around.

This is Pirozhkova’s first world title. She won the silver medal in the 2010 World Championships.

According to the Website, www.TheMat.com, Pirozhkova delivered with a clutch takedown on former Junior World Champion Taybe Yusein of Bulgaria to win the gold late last month at the World Championships.

At this year’s Olympics, the U.S. women’s freestyle wrestler lost to Latvian Anastasija Grigorjeva in the first round of competition, while her mother, five sisters and three brothers watched.

A few days after she returned home from London, Pirozhkova said she would try again in 2016.

Pirozhkova, who wrestles in the 63 kg., or 138.75-pound weight class, has been training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., since 2005.

Pirozhkova, who could not be reached on Monday, told TheMat.com that she went to the Worlds “really focused” and that she wrestled aggressively. She said when she had the chance to win the Worlds, she had to make sure she “got it done.”
