Letter: Help in making a difference

This letter is to publicly thank several local people who have recently helped make a huge difference in the life of a child who is enrolled in our program here at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County.

“Little Sister” Abby and her “Big Sister” Melissa enjoy doing lots of fun things together since being matched 2 years ago. During this time, now 13-year-old Abby has grown out of her child-sized bicycle and has been in need of a new, adult-sized bike. Finding and purchasing the right bike for Abby proved to be a significant challenge for her family and her Big Sister. Abby has also experienced some health concerns which are greatly alleviated by staying active, but bike riding is really the only physical exercise she feels comfortable doing.

It has been tough for her health-conscious “Big” to see her struggle. Big Sister Melissa took up the project, determined to make the new bike happen! With help from Justin Killeen at Energia Fitness and significant help from Dave Buckley and Valley Bike & Ski Werks, all of Hadley, as well as a donation from Indoor Action owner Jeff Coulson and his Greenfield-based nonprofit, Sports for Life Foundation, Abby now has a fantastic new bike! The package was made complete with complimentary bike tune-ups, a new helmet to keep her safe, and a new lock to keep it all secure. She even got a lesson on riding the new adult style bike. Abby is now riding frequently and loves her new wheels. She has access to the exercise she needs and wants. We are all so grateful for the generosity of our community! Thank you to all who made it work for Abby, from all of us at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County.
