Neighbors: Autumn is just around the corner
September is just around the corner, and I’m actually starting to hear from some of you about your autumn events. Can you believe it?
It’s been a great summer, so far. I’m looking forward to an even better fall.
The 165th Franklin County Fair will be held Sept. 5 through 8 — that’s always a wonderful time. I think seeing people I haven’t seen in a while is what I like most about it. Well, and fried dough, of course.
Then, leaves will be changing color before we know it. We live in such a beautiful area for that, don’t we?
I’m really excited, because not only do I get to enjoy a colorful Franklin County this year, but my friend Judy and I are going to Squam Lake in New Hampshire just about the time fall colors hit their peak there.
Now let’s see what’s going on:
YELP FOR HELP, the fund that pays for strays, will hold its annual major fundraiser, “Paws Up!” during Warwick’s Old Home Days on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the “Pup Tent” on the Town Common. As usual, 100 percent of all Yelp makes will go to pay for veterinary care for homeless animals.
There will be lots of prizes and, of course, lots to buy, including handcrafted jewelry, cards, pillowcases, wallets, eyeglass cases and items for pets. In honor of Warwick’s 250th anniversary, there will be a table of items specially priced at $2.50.
ALSO ON SATURDAY, 4-H, part of the UMass Extension in Amherst, will hold an open house from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Greenfield Savings Bank’s Community Room, 282 Avenue A in Turners Falls.
4-H is open to all youth ages 5 through 18. Members participate in projects that include horses, leadership, rocketry, sheep, rabbits, computer science, sewing, gardening, biking, poultry, and so much more.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about 4-H, get to GSB on Saturday.

WE’RE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TAG SALE season, and Buckland Public Hall Committee is holding its annual sale on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sept. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. at 15 Upper St. in Buckland. Sept. 1 will be a $2 bag day — fill a bag with stuff for just $2.
All proceeds will benefit hall preservation and maintenance.
OUR NEIGHBOR AL MONROE of Northfield will be celebrating his 100th birthday at Trinitarian Congregational Church at 147 Main St. in Northfield on Sept. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m.
His wife told me it will be an open house where people can “come in and say ‘hello’ to Al.”
She said light refreshments and cake will be served.
A very happy (early) birthday, Al.
That’s it for now, folks. Have a great weekend.
