Erving man charged with 2008 child rape

GREENFIELD — An Erving man was arraigned on a charge of forcible rape of a child Friday in Greenfield District Court.

Christopher A. Stevens, 26, of North Street, Erving, pleaded innocent to the charge and was released on bail.

The charge was brought on allegations that he had forced a then-14-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him while the two lived in the same Millers Falls house more than five years ago.

The victim told interviewers that the last of the offenses occurred in February of 2008.

According to an arrest report filed by Detective William Doyle, the victim told an interviewer with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office in April of 2009 that Stevens had forced her to give him oral sex at least five times, and said that he had made her use her hand on his genitals several times as well.

The victim said she was able to remove herself from the situation on some occasions, according to the report. She also told police that Stevens had threatened to harm her if she told anyone about his activities, wrote Doyle.

The victim told police that she had told her mother of the assaults, and that her mother made Stevens move out of the family’s home.

Doyle wrote that statements given by the victim during multiple interviews concurred with each other.

On Thursday, Montague police arrested Stevens, and questioned him at the station.

Stevens denied the allegations, telling police that he never so much as hugged the victim, Doyle wrote.

Doyle wrote that Stevens told police it was “her word against his,” and that his lawyer would “eat her up on the stand” during cross-examination.

Stevens was released on bail, under the condition that he have no contact with and stay 50 yards away from the victim, remain drug and alcohol free and submit to random screenings, and continue to comply with conditions ordered by the drug court.

Stevens is set to return to court Nov. 14 for a bind-over hearing.
