TURNERS FALLS — The report cards are in, with an endorsement for first-year Superintendent Michael Sullivan from the Gill-Montague Regional School Committee.
Overall, three of the nine members rated Sullivan’s performance as “exemplary,” two “highly proficient,” three “proficient,” none “needs improvement” and one “unsatisfactory,” for an average of “highly proficient.”
Sullivan said there are a lot of things for him to improve on, and thanked the committee for its support.
“It’s an honor to be here and I’m looking forward to being here for many years to come,” Sullivan said.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education designed the new evaluation rubrics, for both administrators and teachers, with instructions that “proficient” should be the grade for an effective instructor or administrator, with “exemplary” reserved for those “whose practice in a particular area is so strong that it can be a model for others.”
July 1 will mark one year for Sullivan in the district. Sullivan is the first superintendent on a long-term contract after two years of interim superintendents.
The ratings are drawn from a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education scorecard asking the nine school committee members to rate the superintendent’s performance in five areas: on his own goals, on instructional leadership, management of the district, family and community engagement, and the professional culture under his direction.
Ratings were on one-to-five and one-to-four scales ranging from unsatisfactory to exemplary and did not meet goals to exceeded goals.
Sullivan’s marks were reliably at the positive end of the scale.
Compiled comments read off by the chairwoman included praise for his human resources and safety work, “clear, respectful and forthright” communication, commitment and dedication to all aspects of the job, and both praise and condemnation of his budget management.
