Letter: Don’t derail this train
Can you believe this? The mayor tells me the town department wants to pull our so-much-loved little kids play train out of the Energy Park.
The Recreation Department says the wood train does not meet code for standard municipal playground equipment. They want metal or heavy plastic construction. Indestructible.
And the DPW does not want the upkeep of our wood play train. They want metal or heavy plastic construction (price tag $10,000 or $20,000?)
Fact 1: This is not a hard-hitting grade-school playground. In fact, we have always prohibited unsupervised big kids’ wild games at our little kids’ play train. The bigger kids would drive away young family games. No, this is not a code-required municipal playground! This is a little kids educational adventure “all-aboard” play train. Over and over we see the real freight trains with smiling engineer waving “toot-toot” going by.
Mr. DPW, I just talked with Mowry & Schmidt contractors. They will donate the minor repairs that come up in the course of a year or so (right now a couple loose boards on the caboose). Otherwise, not rot, even! Every couple of years a service club has donated and brushed on some wood sealer. Snow and Sons dumps off a truckload of landscaped pine bark mulch. Our community loves the little kids play train.
Let’s hear from you ...
