Deerfield crash nets multiple charges for Gardner woman

DEERFIELD — Police have arrested a Gardner woman after a high-speed chase, alleging she lost control of her vehicle while driving drunk and struck another vehicle near The Wok Restaurant.

At about 8 p.m. Thursday, police arrested Donna T. Stanley, 52, on a second offense drunken driving charge and also charged her with drunken driving in an accident with injury, reckless driving, failure to stop for police, driving an uninsured vehicle with suspended registration, speeding 80 mph in a 45-mph zone, a marked lanes violation, a headlight violation and failure to wear a seat belt.

Greenfield District Court issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. She was taken into custody by Gardner Police Friday afternoon and sent to Gardner District Court.

According to Deerfield Police Chief John Paciorek Jr., officers received a report of a red Kia Optima being driven by a woman believed to be intoxicated.

An officer posted at Routes 5 and 10 and North Hillside Road spotted the northbound vehicle, and attempted to stop it near Savage’s Market.

The vehicle did not stop, but instead reached speeds over 80 in the 45 mph zone, police said.

Then, unexpectedly, the car stopped and the driver got out, yelling at the police. Then, she got back into her car and took off. Officers lost sight of her as she turned the bend near Keets Road, Paciorek said.

Soon after, officers spotted a crash site just south of the Wok, where the suspect had apparently collided with another vehicle, a Mini Cooper.

According to the police, as Stanley approached another northbound vehicle, she turned a hard left to pass it but lost control. The passenger side of Stanley’s car struck the rear of the second vehicle. Stanley’s vehicle then traveled across the southbound lane and struck a guardrail.

Both drivers were taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for treatment.

Saying the case is an ongoing investigation, police would not release the name of the second driver.
