Train causes fires in Deerfield
DEERFIELD — A train leaving the East Deerfield Rail Yard sparked four brush fires in Deerfield on Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters from Old Deerfield, South Deerfield, Greenfield, Whately and Conway quickly worked to put out the small fires by 1 p.m, Old Deerfield Fire Chief Chet Yazwinski said.
As a train headed west, four fires started along the tracks from Jones Road south to Upper Road.
“Luckily, it was in an area that was easily accessible,” Yazwinski said. “It was not much of a big deal. Just time consuming.”
There was slight damage to some apple trees at Clarkdale Fruit Farm, but nothing major, Yazwinski said.
There were no injuries.
