Letter: Foreign affairs

Is the administration of Mohawk High School in the midst of an identity crisis with all this talk and financial outlay around China and the business of exchange? And why China alone and not other emerging red hot economies such as Brazil, India, Norway, Australia and some of the Pacific Rim countries?

Haven’t public high schools traditionally offered exchange programs through their language departments and clubs? What is Mohawk offering that is unique or different? And why would a foreign family pay to attend Mohawk when there exists a vast network of independent schools both here and abroad? At Northfield Mount Hermon School, for instance, about 50 percent of its student body receive financial aid. (Mohawk figures to charge $30,000 per year, Recorder 11/15). And schools like NMH have long established links to private colleges and universities for its graduates to move onto. In addition, the School for International Exchange is just up the highway in Putney, Vt. This program has and continues to offer first rate in-depth cultural exchange experiences for over 40 years.

So what’s new or innovative in this “progressive” idea being advanced by the Mohawk administration? Some of us would like to know what is really to be accomplished that isn’t already in place in the area.
