Colrain preps for Memorial Hall razing
COLRAIN — Several demolition contractors have toured the town’s Memorial Hall building, in preparation for demolition bids, which are due at the Town Office by Monday at 1 p.m.
Town Coordinator Kevin Fox said representatives from at least seven or eight firms have walked through the building, which was dedicated in 1895 as a memorial to Civil War veterans. Selectmen say the building, which has been vacant for at least 20 years, is in such poor shape that it is becoming a liability.
According to Selectmen’s Chairwomen Eileen Sauvageau, there is no septic system, no room for parking, no accessibility for the handicapped, a crumbling foundation and a leaky roof.
Money for the demolition is to come from a 1986 Community Development Block Grant repayment of home improvement loans.
Special town meeting voters agreed to sell the town-owned building in 2009, but buyers with a plan for restoring the building have not come forward.
