Buoniconti to stay on as Mohawk superintendent

BUCKLAND — Superintendent of Schools Michael Buoniconti will continue heading the Mohawk and Hawlemont regional school districts, after narrowly missing a 20-member school board vote to become the next superintendent for the larger Wachusett Regional School District.

Buoniconti was one of three finalists interviewed to head the district, which has 13 schools and about 7,400 students.

On Monday night, after a meeting lasting at least five hours, the Wachusett school board voted to promote its current deputy superintendent, Darryll McCall, to the superintendent’s job. The meeting began at 7 p.m., but the school board was deadlocked between Buoniconti and McCall. At around 1 a.m. Tuesday, The Recorder received an e-mail that McCall was ultimately selected.

According to the Worcester Telegram, the meeting required four “straw ballots” of the 20 committee members present. The first three of these votes were deadlocked 10-10. Two motions to adjourn the meeting to another night were defeated and a motion to reopen the superintendent search got no support, the Telegram reported. Eventually, a school board member who initially backed Buoniconti changed her vote to end the deadlock.

Buoniconti has headed the Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont regional school districts since 2005 and has renewed his contract with the Mohawk and Hawlemont districts for another three-year term.
