Big Y recalls ground sirloin
Big Y supermarkets are voluntarily recalling ground sirloin that had been packaged in the same plant as a Kansas-based meat packing company that recalled some of its product Thursday.
The recall includes fresh-ground 87 percent lean sirloin, and 87 percent lean sirloin steak patties, sold between July 18 and Thursday.
Citing fears of E. coli bacterial contamination, Kansas-based National Beef Packing Co. voluntarily recalled more than 50,000 pounds of ground beef.
The recall of the Big Y beef processed in the same plant was a precaution, as no meat from Big Y stores had tested positive for the bacteria as of Thursday morning, according to a statement from Big Y administrative assistant Kathy DeNardo.
Big Y will give a full refund to those who return the meat in question, wrote DeNardo.
