New Mole Hollow building owners plan ‘open house’
SHELBURNE FALLS — To tell the community what’s in store for the former landmark Mole Hollow building, the Goldthread Herbal Apothecary & Farm is hosting an open house Feb. 13, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. inside the building, at 10 Deerfield Ave.
The new owners want to share their plans for the building and get feedback and ideas from those attending.
Goldthread Organic Herb Farm and Apothecary owners purchased the old gristmill that overlooks the Glacial Potholes in late November. They plan to create a wellness center, herbal apothecary, tea lounge, holistic health care library and learning center from which to offer classes, according to Edith Mehiel, one of the owners.
“With 10,000 square feet to fill, we will be able to offer our community health care in a brand new form,” she said in an e-mail. “We hope to introduce an approach to wellness that is welcoming, inclusive, accessible, affordable and empowering.”
She said the mill’s offerings will include a full-service retail apothecary and dispensary, tea lounge and elixir bar, library, learning center and a clinical practice.
“Goldthread believes that medicine should be seen as more than a pill in a bottle,” she wrote. “We hope the Mill will serve as a home for a whole new way of engaging medicine and community.”
According to Mehiel, Goldthread began over a decade ago, started by William Siff, with a small herbal apothecary and private acupuncture practice in downtown Northampton. Inspired by local co-ops and local agriculture, Siff grew interested in locally grown herbs and medicinal plants. In 2004, he and his family bought a farm in Conway, where they now cultivate at least 100 varieties of medicinal and culinary herbs.
The farm lead Siff to create a seven-month herbal training program called “Farm to Pharmacy.”
The Goldthread Apothecary was based in Florence for the past six years, until it closed last year.
The open house will include tea, light snacks, and discussion of the plans for this building. There will also be a question-and-answer session toward the end of the meeting.
