SHELBURNE FALLS — The movie filmed primarily in Shelburne Falls last summer — “The Judge” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall — has been selected for the opening night film of the Toronto International Film Festival, which will run from Sept. 4 to 14.

“The Mrs. and I are thrilled to share that the Toronto International Film Festival has officially selected ‘The Judge’ as its OPENING NIGHT film,” Downey said in his Facebook announcement. “Such an honor to kick off this ten-day event for audiences who are true fans of cinema.”

Downey was also executive producer of the Warner Bros. film, and his wife, Susan Downey, was producer.

Last June, a crew was based in Shelburne Falls, staging a tornado down Bridge Street, among other scenes. For the filming, the village’s name was changed to “Carlinville, Ind.,” and glimpses of Baker Pharmacy’s soda fountain and the Iron Bridge are included in the trailer for the movie.

The film is about a big-city lawyer, Hank Palmer (Downey), who returns to his small hometown for his mother’s funeral, only to learn that his estranged father is a murder suspect. The film also stars Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Billy Bob Thornton, Dax Shepard and Sarah Lancaster.

Besides the scenes shot in Shelburne Falls, there were also scenes filmed in Millers Falls, Sunderland, Deerfeld and other Massachusetts towns.

“The Judge” is scheduled to be released to movie theaters on Oct. 10.
