GCC Foundation raises more than $800,000

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Community College Foundation has surpassed its goal for its annual fundraising campaign.

“When we came in this morning, we were about $33,000 from our ($800,000) goal,” Regina Curtis, director of the GCC foundation, said Friday.

All day long, she said, her computer chimed to notify her of online donations, and people filed into the college with checks in hand, ready to give.

With donations coming in too fast to count, Curtis said she didn’t yet have a total Friday afternoon. That’s a good problem to have.

Friday’s end of the public fundraising campaign comes right before the school’s Sunday graduation, and Curtis said the timing helped put GCC and its effect on its students in the spotlight.

In the coming weeks, Curtis and her crew will continue to tally donations, including some from “last minute heroes” that she expects to come in by the June 30 end of the fiscal year.

“We’re anxious to figure out how much came in, and thank everyone,” said Curtis.

Much of the money raised will bolster existing scholarship funds, and one donor earmarked the check for the school’s permaculture program.

Those in the area come forward year after year to give to the foundation. The 2012 annual campaign raised $845,179, coming from about 1,170 donors.

“The community is wonderful in how they step up to support their community college and its students,” said Curtis.

Totals from this year’s campaign will be released in June, she said.
