Franklin County Fair seeks parade entries

GREENFIELD — Mike Nelson is looking for creative floats and entries that will address the theme of “165 reasons to go to the fair,” — the theme of the 165th Franklin County Fair.

Nelson, who is chairman of the Franklin County Agricultural Society Parade, said at least 100 applications have been mailed out, and while some entries are already in, he is looking for more.

Nelson said the theme is in keeping with the fact this is the 165th Franklin County Fair, which has always prided itself on being a series of agricultural events and contests, plus lots of entertainment. Opening night is Sept. 5.

Parade entries must reflect that “165 reasons to go to the fair” theme, he said. Judging will be based on originality, creativity and expression of the parade theme.

The parade will begin from behind the Greenfield Middle School at 5 p.m., head down Federal Street, right onto Main Street, then onto River Street and Laurel Street, up to the fairgrounds.

Every parade participant has to purchase a wristband for $1 each, and that allows for entry in the parade and to the fair opening night. They must be purchased with the application. There is no fee for the parade entry, with two exceptions: vehicles that classify as advertising are charged a $75 entry fee per vehicle, and political entries are $75 per candidate.

Money raised from parade entries will go toward maintaining the restoration of the historic Roundhouse, which is the symbol for the fair.

Entry classes consist of agriculture, human services, antique vehicles (1982 or older), bands, performing arts, and an open class for all other entries, with first, second and third prizes, in all classes.

Parade applications are available at the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, on line at: www.fcas.com, by calling Nelson at 522-0712 or at: michaelnelsonmba@gmail.com. There is a registration deadline of Aug. 24. Entries postmarked after that date will pay a $50 late entry fee.

Nelson is also interested in hearing from businesses that would like to sponsor entries or help to sponsor the cost of the parade itself.
