Ashfield wreck sends 3 to hospital

ASHFIELD — A two-car accident sent three people to the hospital Tuesday evening.

At 5:45 p.m., state police were called to an accident on Route 112, just north of the Route 116 intersection, said Trooper William O’Connell.

“There were two vehicles, with three people involved, and all were trapped in the vehicles,” said O’Connell. “There was some serious personal injury, but no fatalities that I know of.”

O’Connell said one of the patients may have had a spinal injury. The scene, he said, looked grizzly.

“The vehicles were both pretty mangled,” said O’Connell. “They had to use the Jaws of Life to get them out.”

The involved vehicles, a sedan and a pickup, were cut apart to gain access to the injured.

O’Connell said the roads were wet at the time of the accident, but that road surfaces had not yet begun to ice up.

Route 112 was closed in both directions, as emergency workers tended to the injured, and police investigated the crash. O’Connell said the road was reopened after an hour and a half. Police didn’t leave the scene until shortly before 10 p.m.

Identities of those injured were unavailable at press time.

“We try to get them treated as soon as possible; we don’t stop to check their wallets,” said O’Connell.

O’Connell said the state police accident reconstruction team was called in to assist, and the investigation remains open.
