Mohawk official takes G-M job
BUCKLAND — School Business Administrator Joanne Blier will be leaving the Mohawk Trail school systems as of June 30 , to take a new job as director of business and operations for the Gill-Montague Regional School District.
As part of Superintendent Michael Buoniconti’s administrative team, Blier worked on several initiatives that reduced yearly assessment increases to Mohawk towns and shortened the years of mortgage payments for school buildings that were built or expanded in the 1990s.
In 2009, the Mohawk Trail Regional School District was able to reduce town assessments by $100,000 by becoming one of the first school districts to sign up for employees’ health coverage through the state’s Group Insurance Commission.
In 2010, member towns’ capital assessments went down collectively by $900,000, because the district secured an $11.7 million lump-sum payment from the Massachusetts School Building Authority in state reimbursement funds for capital projects that would have otherwise been paid in installments over eight years.
In her letter of resignation, submitted Wednesday to the Mohawk School Committee, Blier said, “This was not an easy decision, as I have enjoyed being a part of the Mohawk/Hawlemont community for the past eight years, and have made some lifelong friendships during that time.”
Blier is also business manager for the Rowe School District, but had already given notice to Rowe in July that she would not be renewing her Rowe contract.
“Thank you for taking a chance on me as a new business manager back in 2006,” she told the Mohawk committee. She said she was pleased to be leaving the school districts “in better financial positions than when I first arrived.”
