Sunderland Elementary to hold memorial walk
Students, staff to honor late principal Timothy Merritt this morning at 9:30
SUNDERLAND — Today, the Sunderland Elementary School students and staff will walk in honor of their late principal, Timothy Merritt.
The popular principal died unexpectedly on Sept. 28.
Since 2009, the school’s students have walked to the town offices to observe Veterans Day. This year, the school will also honor Merritt. Members of all the branches of the armed services will have a dedication for him.
The service is significant because Merritt initiated it when he became principal in 2009.
“All of this is to keep alive a memory of a man who did an awful lot for the community,” said Edward Hines, a music teacher and friend of Merritt.
Merritt is particularly remembered for his commitment to the country’s armed service members.
His brother is retired from the Navy and his father served in the Air Force.
To help kids remember the purpose of Veterans Day, Merritt started the annual walk.
In 2009, Merritt was named interim principal of Sunderland Elementary and appointed to the permanent position in 2010.
Before that, he worked as an English teacher at Frontier Regional School from 2000 to 2009.
The students are scheduled to walk from the school to the Town Hall starting at 8:50 a.m. for a 9:30 service.
