GCC to host Martin Luther King Day event Monday

Greenfield Community College will host its annual Martin Luther King Day event on Monday to celebrate the legacy and birthday of the civil rights leader.

King, a minister and outspoken activist in the African-American Civil Rights Movement until his assassination in 1968, would have turned 85 this week.

The main campus will be open to the public from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. Family activities — including dance lessons, rock wall climbing, bracelet making and mural painting — will take place for the first two hours.

Then, at noon, there will be lunch and a brief ceremony in the college’s dining commons.

There’s been an annual Franklin County celebration commemorating King ever since 1990, when Dwayne and LaWanza Lett-Brewington first organized a local event in Greenfield.
