James Street fire still under investigation
GREENFIELD — Sunday morning’s suspicious house fire on James Street remains under investigation, with no official cause and the fire marshal’s office asking the public for information.
“It is suspicious in that it was a vacant building, nobody living there, no utilities and it was secure,” said State Fire Marshal’s Office spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth.
Mieth asked anybody in the area at the time, or who might otherwise know anything, to call the arson hotline. Firefighters responding to a box alarm shortly after 2 a.m. found the fire well under way at 58 James St., and the house was ultimately razed.
The state ArsonWatch rewards up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest or indictment in cases of arson. The number for the confidential hotline is 800-682-9229.
Mieth said the Fire Marshal’s Office this week made an arrest in a year-old arson thanks to information received through the hotline.
The fire is also under investigation by the Greenfield fire and police departments.
