Athol man convicted of child rape

Mark Goewey, 51, of Athol, has been convicted of three counts of aggravated rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child.

A Franklin County Superior Court jury handed down the verdict Tuesday following a trial before Judge Bertha Josephson.

Sentencing is set for Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Goewey is subject to a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in state prison.

The trial lasted seven days, during which the jury heard testimony from the now-21-year-old victim, who described the sexual abuse she suffered from the time she was 9 to 13 at the hands of the defendant, her mother’s then-partner, in the family’s Athol home.

“The victim is an incredibly resilient young woman who testified about the horrific abuses she suffered with untold bravery and resolve,” said Assistant District Attorney Carrie Russell, who prosecuted the case.

“We are hopeful that the jury’s verdicts will provide her with some measure of closure and a renewed strength to move forward in her life.”
