Arlington woman killed in Route 2 crash in Athol

ATHOL — An Arlington woman is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Route 2 Thursday afternoon.

The 68-year-old woman was a passenger in a Toyota Prius driven by her husband. Trooper Alexander Nguyen said the man was flown to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by helicopter ambulance to be treated for his injuries. There were no other passengers in the Prius.

Their identities were not released Thursday, pending notification of family members.

The four-car crash happened at about 3 p.m. near exit 17.

Nguyen said an eastbound car passed several vehicles in the breakdown lane before it went back into the travel lane, striking the Arlington couple’s Prius and pushing it across the median and into the westbound lane.

The driver of an oncoming Ford Transit van tried to swerve, Nguyen said, but was unable to miss the Prius.

After the collision with the van, the Prius was struck by an oncoming tractor trailer, said Nguyen.

Nguyen said the other drivers were shaken up, but were not seriously injured.

The road was closed for nearly five hours as personnel responded to the scene and state police detectives investigated the accident.

Nguyen said charges had not been filed in the accident Thursday night, as the investigation was still underway.
