Nail salon burglary nets charges

GREENFIELD — A Montague man faces burglary charges after a Main Street nail salon break-in over the weekend.

According to police reports, not only was Miki Miyazaki seen leaving the business and glass shards found in his pockets, he left the stolen cash register wrapped in a distinctive coat and reportedly had earlier asked for burglary suggestions.

Miyazaki, 31, of 495a Federal St., Montague, pleaded innocent at his arraignment Monday in Greenfield District Court to charges of with breaking and entering into a building in the daytime to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $250 and possession of a burglarious instrument.

According to the police report filed by Sgt. David Rice of the Greenfield Police, a witness called police at 6:07 a.m. Saturday to report that he was following a man on foot who he had just seen emerge from Lucky Nail Salon.

Police found Miyazaki, whom Rice recognized from a suspicious person complaint earlier that morning, walking in the area. Rice wrote that he asked to see the soles of his boots, noted a piece of tempered glass and arrested him after confirming the glass door to the business had been smashed. The witness also recognized Miyazaki, according to the report and police found the unopened cash register between parked cars on Chapman Street, wrapped in a coat covered in red paint that Rice wrote he recognized as Miyazaki’s from the earlier meeting. The burglarious instrument charge stems from a single glove and a receipt for gloves purchased at 5:19 a.m. at CVS Pharmacy, found on him along with shards of broken glass.

A man Rice spoke to told him that Miyazaki had approached him and asked what the best place was to break into.

Judge William F. Mazanec III ordered Miyazaki released on personal recognizance with the conditions that he remain drug free and submit to testing and participate in the Hoist program.
