NEW YORK — A gunman went on a rampage through a Brooklyn building early Monday, killing three people and then himself before police arrived, in what appeared to be a dispute among members of a local band, the Yellow Dogs.

Police said the violence unfolded shortly after midnight in the East Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, when someone called 911 to report shots fired inside of a home. There, officials found three men shot to death on different floors of the five-story building.

On the roof, they said, they discovered another man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, with a rifle next to his body.

A man with gunshot wounds to his arm was in stable condition at a local hospital.

Local media quoted neighbors as saying the shooting involved members of a band called the Yellow Dogs, and the musical group’s social media accounts lighted up with messages of “RIP” and condolences as news spread of the killings.

The group’s Twitter profile described it as a “Post Punk/Dance Punk band from Tehran/IRAN, living in Brooklyn at the moment.” The group has played at several popular venues in New York City. The address listed on the band’s online information matches that provided by police of the shooting location.

The New York Post quoted unidentified law enforcement sources as saying the shooter was enraged after being thrown out of the band, which was formed in 2006.
