Conway approves new handbook for town staff

CONWAY — The Selectboard has approved a new employee handbook, setting new policies for the town staff.

The new rules will take effect July 1.

The Selectboard also agreed to provide employees with a one-time, one-week vacation so current employees don’t lose accrued vacation time during the transition between the old and new policies. The new handbook was approved Monday, 11 months after the first draft was submitted by the Personnel Committee.

Though the Selectboard approved the book in July 2012, its rollout was delayed as the town discovered differences between town practice and proposed policies.

The handbook — a document of rules for town employees and working conditions — puts rules regarding hiring, firing, compensation and vacation time on paper to help the town avoid litigation.

Selectboard continues to review church proposal

CONWAY — Selectboard Chairman John O’Rourke said the board is continuing to review a request by the United Congregational Church for $37,000 out of the M and M Germain Trust Fund.

For $15,000, the historic church off Whately Road would renovate its bathrooms and for $22,000 it would install a ramp.

The proposals apply to one of the trust fund’s purposes — to help pay for the rehabilitation of needy handicapped children. The other purpose is college scholarships.

The renovations are part of extensive work under way, mostly to repair water damage to the church from roof leaks and drainage problems. The church was closed in 2011 because of mold problems and the congregation is eager to return as it nears the end of a nearly $500,000 renovation.
