United Way hosting book drive on Town Common today

GREENFIELD — In an effort to connect Franklin County children with reading material this summer, the United Way of Franklin County will collect new and gently used books for preschool to middle school readers today on the Town Common.

It’s the second “Day of Action” United Way will hold in Greenfield. Last year, the agency distributed 6,000 books to 1,200 Franklin County children.

Community volunteers will be at the Town Common from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., packing four to five books into bags along with bookmarks and information for parents donated by Channing Bete Co.

World Eye Bookshop has offered a 10 percent discount to customers who purchase books to donate at their store. The money saved through the discounts will be used to buy more books for the agency.

First Book, the national clearing house for donated books from publishers, has donated 1,200 books to the cause.

United Way is encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate books and the agency is seeking volunteers for the Day of Action.
