WHATELY — A lightning bolt struck a Whately home during Wednesday morning’s turbulent thunderstorm, scorching the roof and leaving its three residents without a home.

According to Whately Fire Chief John Hannum, at about 3:22 a.m. Wednesday, lightning sparked the wooden roof of the log cabin home at 17 Laurel Mountain Road.

The two parents and young child were awakened by the thunder and escaped the home safely.

The fire damaged parts of a ceiling and walls and the eaves.

The roof needs to be replaced, work that had begun Thursday. The home has been condemned until the repair is complete.

About 50 firefighters responded from Whately, Hatfield, Northampton, Old Deerfield, South Deerfield and Conway. They contained the fire within an hour, Hannum said.
