Many open seats on Charlemont boards
CHARLEMONT — The deadline for annual election nomination papers has passed, leaving more empty spaces than candidates on the ballot for the May 28 election.
After selectmen’s Chairwoman Jean Brisson announced this spring she was not running a third term of office, Hawlemont School Committee Chairwoman Beth Bandy took out nomination papers and will be the only candidate on the ballot.
But Bandy has said she will leave the School Committee if elected to the Board of Selectmen — and that could leave the town with only one member on the Hawlemont school board, since Hawlemont member Eric Dean is not seeking re-election.
Besides Bandy, incumbent Stephen Reynolds is seeking re-election to two positions: a one-year term as tree warden and a five-year term on the Parks and Recreation Commission.
Evelyn Locke is running for a three-year term as library trustee.
Positions that may only be filled by write-in candidates, at this point, are:
town moderator (one-year position); assessor (three-year term); Planning Board (five-year term, being vacated by Trevor Mackie); Planning Board associate member, three-year term; Board of Health, (two three-year terms) one is vacant, the other has been held by Earl Bowen who is not seeking re-election.
Also, a three-year term of constable has no nominees.
