Colrain hike planned for Saturday

COLRAIN — The Deerfield River Watershed Association is inviting residents and visitors to explore the area and its flora and fauna.

The next hike is scheduled for Saturday in the Catamount Hills of Colrain. This will start at the end of East Catamount Road at 10 a.m. and have a little climb to begin with but a very gentle four-mile loop to enjoy MacLeod Pond, where there will be lunch and then exploration of caves on the way back to the cars. Bring lunch and a flashlight for the caves.

To reach the starting point, from Route 112 in Griswoldville, Colrain, take the Adamsville Road a half mile to Lively Road on the left then a quick left onto East Catamount Road to the end, where there is parking.

Register with the leader, Polly Bartlett, at 413-626-6628. Rain will cancel. Hikers should be prepared to hike the whole distance. These hikes are free and open to the public

Colrain candidates night: Wednesday

COLRAIN — A Candidates Night will be held on Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Griswold Memorial Library. Refreshments will be served.

Sen. Downing to host coffee and conversation Friday

BUCKLAND — State Sen. Benjamin B. Downing, D-Pittsfield, will hold his third Coffee & Conversation of 2013 on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Buckland Town Hall at 17 State St.

To be accessible to all his constituents, no matter where they live, Downing hosts 10 such open forums in rotating towns across his district throughout the year. In 2013, the first four events will take place in the new communities he represents: Franklin County’s Shelburne and Buckland and Hampden County’s Blandford and Chester.

All are welcome to join the Senator and his district staff to pose a question, submit a comment or pitch an idea regarding state government. Downing provides free coffee and refreshments.
