Longtime selectman Allen to resign

TURNERS FALLS — Longtime selectman Patricia Allen announced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Montague Board of Selectmen that she will resign her post effective June 24.

Allen said she had every intention of completing her term when elected, but circumstances within her family have changed dramatically within the past year, such that she has not been able to participate in all meetings.

Often participating remotely via speakerphone in recent months, Allen said there have been times when her parents’ concerns precluded even that involvement.

Allen won a three-way race for an empty seat on the board in 1999 and has served since. Her current term would have expired in 2014.

“Thank you to the voters who took a chance when they elected a newcomer,” Allen said.

Allen said she would have stayed on longer, but the timing of the June 25 special election, to fill former senator John Kerry’s seat, provided a good opportunity to fill the vacancy.
