G-M schools budget vote set for tonight
TURNERS FALLS — The Gill-Montague Regional School Committee meets tonight to accept or reject the administration’s proposed budget for the coming year.
The committee in January accepted a preliminary budget of $17,292,956, a 4.4 percent increase over this year’s $16,567,640, but projected assessments to the member towns have since decreased.
The original preliminary assessment was a 4.7 percent increase, but is closer to 2 percent as of early this month, according to Interim Superintendent Mark Prince. As of the latest budget presentation, Montague’s projected assessment stood at $8,012,702, an increase of $162,098 , or 2.1 percent, over the budget approved last year. Gill’s projected share of the cost came to $1,442,465, a $34,407, or 2.4 percent, increase. These figures are also preliminary, and no numbers are final until approved by the School Committee, with residents at the Gill and Montague town meetings then voting to accept or reject their town’s assessment.
The School Committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the TV studio of the Turners Falls High School, 222 Turnpike Road.
