GCC to host state budget hearing Tuesday
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dining Commons
Greenfield Community College will host a legislative Joint Committee on Ways and Means budget hearing next week.
The Joint Committee — chaired by Sen. Stephen Brewer, D-Barre, and Rep. Brian Dempsey, D-Haverhill, with co-chairs Rep. Stephen Kulik, D-Worthington, and Sen. Jennifer Flanagan, D-Leominster — will meet on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the GCC Dining Commons.
The House Committee on Ways and Means examines Gov. Deval Patrick’s proposed budget, released last month, and will release its own recommendations for the annual budget for deliberation by the House of Representatives.
Prior to release of the House Ways and Means Budget, Joint Ways and Means Committee budget hearings are held across the state. Tuesday’s hearing is open to the public and will include welcoming remarks from GCC President Robert Pura.
The hearing will also include presentations by local and state education officials.
Among the topics to be discussed this budget season: how much money to give to GCC and 14 other Massachusetts community colleges.
Patrick’s budget proposal called for an additional $20 million to community colleges, which would give GCC $9.2 million — a 16 percent increase from last year’s allocation.
