Woman killed in Friday crash was Royalston resident

NEW SALEM — The young woman who lost her life in a single-car accident Friday on Route 202 was a 19-year-old Royalston resident, according to state police.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.

Trooper Thomas Murphy, a state police spokesman, said Sunday his orders were not to release the victim’s name until Monday.

Murphy said he believed there were some issues with notifying the next of kin.

State police are investigating the accident, called in around 12:44 p.m. near the high-tension lines.

Police said the driver was headed north on Route 202 when she lost control of the car, a 2003 Saturn Ion according to State Police, went off the road and struck a tree.

New Salem Police Chief Joseph Camden said he could not confirm the name of the victim as the State Police took over for that portion of the investigation.

Camden said New Salem and Orange Police Departments and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and helped control traffic.
