Buckland Public Library fete today

BUCKLAND — The Buckland Public Library is celebrating its recent “green building” certification with a celebration today, to thank everyone who made its LEED “silver” certification possible.

LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” and it’s a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Counsel to measure energy efficiency.

The original 900-square-foot library building was built in 1890, but a new 3,000-square foot addition was added, after two decades of fundraising, and dedicated last year.

The library is also celebrating its expanded book collection, through a Books for Children grant made possible by the Libri Foundation.

The festivities, live music, refreshments and the celebration begin at 10 a.m.

The library is located at 30 Upper Street, in Upper Buckland.

Montague hires new assistant principal

TURNERS FALLS — The district has hired a new assistant principal for the Montague Elementary School.

Mark Prince, Gill-Montague Regional School District interim superintendent, announced Tuesday the selection team had interviewed several applicants and selected Sharon Moberg.

Prince said Moberg has a strong background in instruction as a teacher in the Springfield public school system since 2000 and is a trainer in the Responsive Classroom elementary education approach.

Moberg will begin work Dec. 3, joining Principal Mark Andrews and Assistant Principal Kevin Cusineau, both also new this year.

Moberg replaces Travis Yagodzinski, who left Gill-Montague this month for a job in the Hawlemont Regional School District.

The district created the second assistant principal’s position this year to better manage the two buildings of the Montague Elementary School.
