Local goods catalog successful

ASHFIELD — This year’s fourth annual Local Goods Catalog brought in about $20,000 worth of business to local farmers, artists and businesses, yielding $7,000 for Sanderson Academy’s popular after-school program, which serves most of the pupils going to school there.

When it was first created, the school’s Local Goods Catalog replaced a commercial fund-raising gift catalog (in which gift items were all made overseas) with one showing gift items that all come from Ashfield or Plainfield.

The catalog has not only yielded more money for the school and for local commerce: it has also created more community connections for the farmers and students through the after-school program.

From fall through spring, Sanderson’s after-school program offers children between six to 10 one-hour classes, which are held three times per week. And many of them are now taught by the vendors whose goods appear in the catalog.

“We’ve had film classes, cooking classes, photography, soccer, jewelry-making and outdoor games,” said PTO member Mary Beth Ritchie of Sangha Farm in Ashfield. “The kids love it. It’s low-cost for the families, and the school is always an active place.”

The catalog sales pay for after-school program materials and a stipend for those teaching programs.

Nancy Hoff of Ashfield Hardware, Jeweler Clair Mockler, and graphic artist Lynn Taylor helped create the cataloq, which sells local foods, crafts, music and gift certificates for Ashfield-based farmers, artists and services.

Selectboard reorganization set

ASHFIELD — A reorganization meeting for the Selectboard, which was canceled last Wednesday, has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.

Only two items are posted on the agenda: selecting a new chairman to replace Douglas Field, who resigned from the board a week ago, and holding a tax classification hearing.
