Two write-ins for Pioneer Valley School Committee
BERNARDSTON — There are two write-in candidates for School Committee on the presidential election ballot on Tuesday.
Due to confusion over the number of signatures needed to get onto the ballot, Michael Sharry, of Hillcrest Drive, and James Ruder, of Brattleboro Road, are running unopposed as write-ins for two open four-year seats.
Sharry says he became interested in serving on the committee because he has a daughter at Bernardston Elementary School.
“It’s important for our kids to get a good education, but it’s also important to be fiscally responsible,” he said.
He said he was disappointed not to see anyone else interested in taking the place of departing School Committee member Paul Luther.
“I’m up for the challenge,” said Sharry.
Ruder is a current School Committee member who had been appointed to fill a partial term.
“It’s been interesting to learn the challenges the School Committee faces,” he said. “It’s too bad there’s not more interest.”
He said the committee’s meetings are open to the public, and suggested that residents and parents attend.
“Come in, listen. Knowing how the process works is enlightening,” he said.
He said he was glad to see Sharry become interested and run for the committee.
“It’s good to have new blood,” said Ruder.
Voters in Northfield, Leyden, and Warwick may also vote for Ruder and Sharry in the election. Their full names must be spelled correctly to count.
