Charlemont OKs new pole for
CHARLEMONT — To help the Massachusetts Broadband Institute wire the hilltowns for high-speed Internet, selectmen approved a new utility pole that National Grid representative Bonnie Brown says is needed to support communication cables, to establish a fiber route through the town.
Brown told the board Monday night that MBI had requested the pole “to correct a long span” between existing poles on Route 8A North, so there would be additional clearance to make space broadband wires. Brown said the existing poles are 300 feet apart, and the new pole will be installed at about 150 between them.
Part of the Town Hall basement is to be leased to the MBI to serve as a “point of interconnection” telecommunications center for seven other hilltowns as well as for Charlemont.
