Book Shop closes in Amherst
AMHERST — The Food For Thought Books Collective on North Pleasant Street is closing after nearly four decades in business, despite fundraisers last summer and winter and reducing the size of its quarters.
Members sent an email to friends and supporters Monday letting them know that the book shop is closing in the midst of its 38th year.
“We are writing with hard news. Despite our best efforts, Food For Thought Books has been forced to close its doors. We can no longer keep the store open,” the statement reads.
Landlord Barry Roberts reduced the rent last year and the store gave up part of its space to the neighboring All Things Local store, but sales plummeted and even with the reduced space the collective could not make its rent or payroll, according to the statement issued Monday.
The letter expresses appreciation to those who supported the store.
“To everyone who bought books, who donated books, who donated funds large and small, who consigned books and cool stuff, who came to do a reading or an event, who stopped in to visit and offer kind words of support or advice, who was in any way part of this collective project — thank you so very much!”
