Springfield man wanted for Florence robbery arrested after chase
NORTHAMPTON — Springfield police early Tuesday arrested a man who is wanted in connection with a December armed robbery of a Florence convenience store.
Shamaad Jones, 19, of Springfield, was arrested about 1 a.m. on Quincy Street on charges of breaking and entering and resisting arrest.
Jones also had an active arrest warrant issued by Northampton on a charge of armed robbery while masked in connection with the Dec. 19 robbery of the Cumberland Farms store at 53 Main St.
Springfield police said Jones also had active warrants issued from Springfield on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, distribution of marijuana, carrying a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.
Northampton police said Jones and a then-17-year-old Northampton boy wearing masks — one carrying a baseball bat, the other brandishing a sword or large knife — entered the convenience store, demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash and candy.
Nobody was injured, police said.
The pair may also be linked to other robberies and motor vehicle break-ins in Northampton and Greenfield, police said.
According to Springfield police, Jones was a passenger in a car Tuesday that was stopped by police on Eastern Avenue for not having a front license plate.
Police said Jones left the car from the passenger side and ran through several back yards until he reached a home on Tyler Street and kicked in the door.
Police said Jones demanded a shirt from the occupant of the home after having removed the white hooded sweatshirt he had been wearing when he fled from the car. Police suspect Jones removed the sweatshirt because it was highly visible and easily spotted.
Jones ran from the home through the front door after the occupant yelled at him to leave, police said. Police caught Jones a short time later and arrested him.
It is not clear when Jones will be arraigned in Northampton District Court on the armed robbery charge.
