20-year tenant to leave Carriage Shops for new location
AMHERST — Amherst Wines & Spirits, an anchor tenant at the Amherst Carriage Shops for the past 20 years, is likely to move to 320 College St. later this year.
The business, owned by Stephen Freedman, is expected to come before the Amherst Select Board April 22 at 6:45 p.m. to request a transfer of the all-alcohol off-premise license to the new site.
A legal advertisement related to this hearing was printed in the Daily Hampshire Gazette Friday. Freedman, who opened the store that specializes in fine wines in early 1994, said he wouldn’t yet comment on the possible move.
The wine shop, like others businesses and non-profits housed at the Carriage Shops, may lose its space at the 233 North Pleasant St. complex when it gets sold, demolished and redeveloped.
Last month, Archipelago Investments made a $4.6 million offer for the site that trustees of the Amherst Carriage Shops Condominium Trust are considering. The site would likely be replaced by a mixed-use project that would include housing and retail.
Another tenant, at the Carriage Shops that has found a new location is Purele Brows & Waxing, which anticipates moving to 138 Russell St. (Route 9) in Hadley center sometime in May or June.
