Amherst athletics boosters host fundraiser
AMHERST — The Amherst Hurricane Boosters on Saturday will host their Monte Carlo Night fundraiser, in which Amherst College’s Valentine Hall becomes an elegant casino.
Partygoers must be at least 21 years old. This will be the 10th time the boosters have held the event, which is one of two major fundraiser the group holds each year. The second fundraiser is a golf tournament held in August.
Last year Monte Carlo Night brought in nearly $20,000 to help the athletic departments at Amherst Regional High School and Amherst Regional Middle School purchase uniforms, balls and other equipment, according to Tiffany Clay, co-chair of the organization.
“It takes a huge number of volunteers, many sponsorships by local businesses, Amherst College’s donation of the space and the wider Amherst area community coming out for the event to make it the success it always has been,” Clay said in an email to the Gazette.
The event runs from 6:30 p.m. until midnight and features two bands, food, wine tastings and a cash bar in addition to games. Among those offered will be roulette, blackjack and Texas Hold ’Em.
The Boosters began raising money for the schools in 2008 when budget cuts left gaps in the athletic programs. “Unfortunately, many of these line items have not been able to be restored to the budget and the Booster fundraisers are heavily relied upon,” Clay said.
Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Participants can also direct $20 of the ticket price to the sports of their choice.
