Amherst school finance official remains on leave
AMHERST — The chief of finances for the Amherst schools, placed on paid administrative leave nearly seven weeks ago, remains off the job.
“The status remains the same,” School Superintendent Maria Geryk said in an email to the Gazette Monday. “It is unclear when I will have updated information.”
Geryk confirmed last month that Robert Detweiler was place on leave Jan. 15, on the eve of annual budget presentations before the local and regional school committees, but would not say why. She has declined to answer further questions about Detweiler’s departure, including whether his work is being investigated. She did say, however, that the Northwestern district attorney’s office is not involved.
Detweiler, who lives in Deerfield, has served as the director of finance and operations since 2005.
Sean Mangano, the assistant director of the business office, has been handling Detweiler’s budget responsibilities in his absence. Human Resources Director Kathryn Mazur has been overseeing the business office on a temporary basis, Geryk said. She also hired Paul Carlson, the former business manager who retired and was succeeded by Detweiler, to work two days a week in the office to keep up with mandated state and federal reporting functions.
