YMCA of Greenfield Notebook
Fall Program Brochure: The 2014-15 Program Brochure is available online at ymcaingreenfield.org or people can pick up a hard copy at the Y’s Welcome Center. The brochure has 21 pages of programs and activities for people of all ages, abilities and interest. The Y’s two specialties are providing lots of programs for new exercisers and creating class/activity options so parents and their children can all do their own Y activity at the same time or play together as a family; in other words, a one stop activity center.
Register for fall classes: Members and non-members can register now for all September/October classes. Classes for children include youth swimming, gymnastics, soccer, before and after school childcare and full-day preschool. Classes/programs for adults include water fitness, strength training, water therapy, volleyball and starter fitness. All fall classes start Sept. 2 to 9 and run for eight weeks. Go to ymcaingreenfield.org and click on “Brochure” for details, times, prices, etc.
Youth Soccer: The Y has soccer programs for boys and girls, age 4 to 12. The programs run for eight weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ages 4 and 5 practice and play a game on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m.; ages 6 and 8 and 9 to 12 are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. The programs focus on skill development, game strategy, fun and fitness. Cost for the eight-week program is $45 for a Y member and $55 for Program Associates for the ages 4 and 5; $50 and $60 for ages 6 to 12. The programs meet at the Greenfield Community College soccer fields. Volunteer coaches are needed; call Dave at 773-3646, ext 436.
Before & After School Childcare: Students in kindergarten to grade 6 in Greenfield, Turners Falls or Gill can register now for the Y’s before and after school childcare programs. Early care is 6:15 to 8:15 a.m. and after care is from school dismissal to 6 or 7 p.m. The Y also provides care on school half days, school vacation days and even snow days. The students use the Y’s game room for early care and the gym, Kid-Fit Center and game room for after school activities. A weekly swim lesson option is also available. Daily active play or exercises are key components of the program. The game room has easy access for parents to drop off or pick up their children. For more information, see Page 7 of the “Brochure” at ymcaingreenfield.org.
Y Full Day Preschool: The Y’s full day preschool provides a quality well-rounded education as well as weekly swimming and gymnastics lessons, daily physical education and a large outdoor play space. The school has two classrooms; one for ages 2.9 to 4 and the other for ages 2 to 5. The school provides early care from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and late care from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., as well as snow day care to meet the needs of working parents. All five-day/48-week students get a free Y-Family membership (a $700 value). Call Janet at 773-3646, ext. 431, to schedule a tour.
New Sports Format: In order to make it easy for parents to schedule their children’s after school activities, the Y has developed a new youth sports format. The same age groups (4 and 5, 6 and 8 and 9 to 12) will have a different sport every eight weeks on the same day and time each week. This way children will be introduced to a variety of sports and parents can have a consistent schedule all year.
