Adult Coed Volleyball League: On Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 15, the YMCA will host an eight-week co-ed volleyball league. The league only has room for eight teams. The games will be from 6:30 to 8 or 8 to 9:30 p.m. Companies or friends are encouraged to put teams together for eight fun evenings of recreational league play. The per person fees are: Y members, included with membership; Program Associates, $35, and nonmembers, $50. Call Dave at 773-3646, ext. 436, for more information. This league is a fun night out for company employees at a very low cost.

Youth Sports Programs: The following youth sports programs run from through March 2.

∎ Basketball Skills & Drills: This program introduces girls and boys to the FUNdamentals of basketball. Skills include shooting, passing, dribbling and teamwork. Saturdays from 9 to 9:45 a.m., ages 4 and 5. Saturdays, 10 to 11 a.m., ages 6 to 8. Fees: Gold Family Member $20, Silver Member $40, Program Assoc. $50.

∎ Preschool Play: This class teaches kids to play as a group and interact as teammates. Cooperative group games, running tag games and brief introduction to a sport like basketball, pillow floor hockey or soccer. Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9 to 9:45 a.m., ages 3 to 5. Sundays from 9 to 9:45 a.m., ages 3 to 5. Fees: Gold Family Member $20, Silver Family Member $40, Program Assoc. $45.

∎ Preschool Floor Hockey: This class will get your child moving. Basic hockey skills using soft padded equipment. Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m., ages 4 and 5. Fees: Gold Family Member $20, Silver Family Member $40, Program Assoc. $45.

∎ Coed Basketball League: This instructional recreational league is for those who want to further their skills. Active practices and developing playing styles in competitive games will refine players’ skills. One weekly practice along with Saturday regulation games. League runs through Feb. 22. Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. with Saturday games at 11:30 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. Ages 9 to 12. Fees: Gold Family Member $25, Silver Member $45, Program Assoc. $50.

∎ Healthy Kids Class: Hour long active class with 30 minutes of games and 30 minutes of a strength training workout in our Kid Fit Center. Sundays from 9 to 10 a.m., ages 6 and older Gold Family Members $20, Silver Members $45, Program Assoc. $50.

Weight Loss Team Challenge: The YMCA is now enrolling teams of three or four people for the winter weight loss team challenge. This eight-week program combines education, exercise, motivation, team coaching and accountability. Typically people lose 8 to 20 pounds during the program. Only 11 teams will be accepted; registration is on a first come first serve basis. Registration deadline: Jan. 16. The program runs from Jan. 21 to March 11. Fees: Y members $109, nonmembers $159. Banishing Female Belly Fat: On Jan. 11, as part of the Y’s Open House, there will be a free presentation from 9 to 10 a.m. on “Banishing Female Belly Fat.” Barb Krolick, RDN, will share information on menopause (including pre and post) belly fat and how a healthy diet strategy can help. The Y’s Open House is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with free classes, tours and door prizes.

Tai Chi Classes: The YMCA now offers four Tai Chi classes each week included in a facility membership. Tai Chi is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Fridays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 6:40 p.m. in the Wellness Center. Tai Chi, a form of exercise developed in ancient China and practiced worldwide, has demonstrated under rigorous scientific studies to have a powerful effect on health. Known for its slow, fluid movements, the central premise in Tai Chi is to integrate the mind and body. Fees: Members, included with membership; Program Associates, $6.50; nonmembers, $9.
