Baystate Health system CEO to step down

New boss is Mark Keroack

The top executive at Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s parent company has announced he’ll resign from his post on July 1 — a move that officials say shouldn’t have an impact on the Greenfield hospital’s day-to-day operations.

Mark Tolosky has served as president and CEO of Baystate Health since 2004. He’ll voluntarily hand off the post to Mark Keroack, the health system’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“We will sustain our longstanding commitment to BFMC, continuing to invest in the hospital and recruit the providers the Franklin County community needs,” Keroack said.

“(Hospital President) Chuck Gijanto already reports to me, I work closely with him on his oversight of BFMC, and I expect our relationship will remain very strong and mutually supportive.”

Over the past year, Baystate Health officials have shown more of a presence in Franklin County. In October, Tolosky visited Greenfield and presented a $150,000 donation to help connect buildings throughout the town with broadband Internet.

“We’re committed to Baystate Franklin Medical Center and this community,” said Tolosky, at a press conference for that announcement.

“We have a charitable mission to serve and do the right thing for our community and we will continue to do that in many ways we had in the past already and certainly some (other) ways in the future.”

Baystate Franklin nurses, engaged for the past two years in a contract dispute with their hospital, have repeatedly criticized Tolosky and others in Springfield. They argue that the health system has pushed its corporate agenda into Greenfield and is ruining the local community hospital.

But Gijanto has countered that Baystate Franklin would be very small or nonexistent without its collaboration in Baystate Health. The parent system’s influence has allowed Greenfield to recruit more doctors and access a fully integrated system of electronic medical records, the president has said.
